     1. A General Guide to Lanzhou University

Lanzhou University (nicknamed "Landa") is one of China's key
universities located at Lanzhou, the geographic center of China,
capital city of Gansu Province, the university was founded in 1909.
Currently, it has two schools: The School of Resources and Envi-
ronment, and the school of Adult Education in addition to 22 de-
partments, 44 majors and more than 20 institutes with 2 national
key laboratories. One is the Laboratory of Applied Organic Chemistry,
the other is the Laboratory of Arid Agricultural Ecology.

In 1981, Lanzhou University was among the first group of universities
 to be approved
in China to have the right to enroll Bachelor, Master and Doctoral
degree candidates and was also authorized to maintain postdoctoral
research programs in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The undergra-
duates degree program is 4 years. For postgraduates and Ph.D. can-
didates, it varies between 2 and 3 years. The number of all kinds
of students on campus is more than 10,000, among whom are near 900
 postgraduate students.

Lanzhou University puts emphasis on basic theoretical and
applying research. Many achievements have been made in fields such
as Chemistry, Cell Biology, Theoretical Physics, Nuclear Physics
and Technology, Geography, magnetics, Plant Physiology, Ecology,
Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Natural Geography, Atmospheric Science,
Inorganic Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, etc. It ranks among the top
ten universities in contributing academic thesis to international
academic journals (at 1993 it went to third among all university),
thus providing their results and information for other countries.
In the last decade, a number of disciplines have emphasized studies
in the special characteristics and problems of China's Northwestern
region in the fields of Customs, Economy, Society, Sciences and
Culture, Dunhuang Studies, Northwestern History and Geography, Popu-
lation, Research and Administration of the Loess Plateau, Glaciation,
Plateau Atmosphere, Plant Physiology, and Arid Ecology that are of
 great interest to the government.

Lanzhou University is active in developing international educa-
tional exchange and cooperation. Academic linkage, such as exchange
of postgraduate students, visiting scholars and scientific research
cooperation have being developed with universities and scientific
organizations in more than 30 foreign countries, including America,
Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Russian, etc.

Currently, Professor Li Fashen is President of Lanzhou University.

     3. Teaching Faculty

There are more than 1200 teachers and scientific research members.
Among them there are 4 members of the Commission of the Chinese Academy
of sciences. 150 professors and 390 associate professors (including as-
sociate research fellows). There are distinguished senior experts at home
and abroad and young scholars who have made outstanding achievements.
With their hard work, rich knowledge, and tireless zeal in teaching, the
sacred teaching faculty of Lanzhou University is nurturing generations
of students, and great research achievements are made.

     4. Research Institutions

In order to meet the demand of scientific development and economic
construction. Lanzhou University has established research institutes
covering the following fields: History, Population, Comprehensive
Exploitation of the Northwest, Higher Education, Northwestern Cultural
Research, Mathematics, Nuclear Research, Neutron Physics and Technology,
Magnetic Material, Electric Materials, Organic Chemistry, Cell Biology,
Plant Physiology, China's Quaternary Glacier and Environment Research.
Higher education and research at Lanzhou University are being equally
promoted by the professional and concurrent research staff in these
institutes through their academic cooperation and multi-disciplines of
 arts and sciences.

     5. National Key Laboratories

     Laboratory of Applied Organic Chemistry

One of the first national key laboratories ratified by the State
Planning Commission. Founded in 1987, the lab has been opened for
visiting scientists both at home and abroad. The laboratory is oriented
to life-related free radical chemistry and natural products chemistry,
mainly dealing with single electron transfer reactions and free radical
reactions of bioactive molecules, as well as extraction, separation,
identification and syntheses of bioactive compounds. The laboratory
is well-equipped with up to date instruments. e.g. 400 MHz NMR,
spectrometer equipped with gradient inverse probe and Photo-CIDNP
probe. GC/MS and HPLC/MS, for high level research in organic chemistry.
The lab now consists of 28 professional researchers and technicians, 33
visiting researchers. Among the 28 professional researchers there are 2
members of the Commission of the Chinese Academy of sciences, 4 doctoral
advisors, 6 professors and research fellows. The lab enrolls doctoral
and postgraduate candidates. it also accepts postdoctoral researchers.

     Arid Agriculture Ecology laboratory

The lab is the only national lab that does research on arid agriculture
ecology. Its founding is base on authorization of conferring bachelor's,
Master's and Doctor's degrees and post Ph.D. Programs in this national
key discipline. The lab has instruments and devices valuing more than 1
million US dollars that varies from detaching of a molecular structure
to remote sensing administration of a large region. At present, the
laboratory is carrying on research in the fields of theoretical
agricultural, plant Physiological Ecology. The lab has 20 well-organized
researchers of various disciplines, among whom there are 2 doctoral
 advisors.

     6. Analytical Testing Center

Financed with the first loan to develop universities by the WORLD
BANK, construction began in 1982. It has more than 20 large-sized ins-
truments and devices including high-distinguishability mass spectrometer,
infrared spectrometer, X-ray quadrupole disffractometer, laser Raman
spectrometer and FT-IR spectrometer etc. The center is mainly engaged
in the determination and analysis of matter's structure. It also conducts
the graduates' experiments and thesis leading to master and Doctor degrees.
A testing service is available to the public. Approved by the state
Technology Superintendence in 1992, it is the approving lab of chemical
and mining products of Gansu Administration for the Inspection of Import
 and Export Commodities.

     7. Computer Center

The center of Computation financed with the loans by the WORLD
BANK was established in 1982. It is equipped with an M-340 Series
Computer System and near 100 microcomputer constituting a network
with some auxiliary systems. Major missions undertaken by the center
include operational service for teaching and research work and for
 university  administration  consultation about  computer programs;
offering public courses in computational language and instructing the
learners in the practical operation of computers. In addition, the
center is open to the public, offering services to users outside the
 campus.

     8. Library

Lanzhou University Library is a member of the National College
Library and Information Working Committee and a leading member of the
Gansu College Library and Information Working Committee. The library
was founded in 1927 and its buildings have been renovated several
times. At present, there are 1.6 million books and a great variety
of periodicals housed in the library, including 1277 volumes of rare
books packed in 167 cases. The library has established friendly rela-
tions and exchanged materials with more than 1,000 units at home and
