Beijing Agricultural University

Beijing Agricultural University (BAU), under direct leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture, is one of the Chinese key universities. With a long history, a glorious tradition, and a good school spirit, BAU is an institution of higher learning of agricultural sciences. She is derived from the Agricultural College of Capital University, which was set up in 1905.

At present, BAU has 9 colleges: Agronomy and Crop Sciences, Animal Science and Technology, Animal Medicine, Resources and Environment, Economics and Management, Bio- logy, Fundamental Sciences and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Agricultural and Food Engineering. The Graduate School consists of 33 specialities for Master programs, 22 for Ph.D programs, 3 research orientations for postdoctoral fellows, and 11 subjects as the national key ones. The College of Continuous Education stresses on the education after school, not only offers training courses and seminars on various agricultural sciences but also takes the responsibility for training agricultural leaders at the levels of counties, prefectures, and provinces. BAU has formed three strata of the higher agricultural educa- tion system: Undergraduate, Graduate, and Continuous educa- tions, which have four functions including: scientific research, agricultural science and technology extension, and agro hi-technology and industry development.

BAU possesses altogether 1000 teachers, among them: there are 400 professors and associate-professors, 4 acade- micians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. 2900 under- graduate students, 500 postgraduates, and 100 Ph.D. stu- dents are studying and working in the university.

BAU has advanced equipment, teaching, and research methods, moreover owns a key laboratory of Agrobiotechno- logy opening to the whole nation, a library with collection of 1 million books implementing open-shelf reading, a press coming out over 100 kinds of books per year, and the teaching farm and experiment stations making up 1,600 hectares of farm land.

In the long period of teaching, research and produc- tion practice, BAU has formed a good school spirit which includes combining theory with practice, serious teaching and studying, hard working and plain living, and solidarity and endeavouring, and a school admonishing which includes having the greatest esteem for science and devoting to agriculture. After the founding of new China, BAU has cultivated 2,000 various agricultural personnel of high levels.

BAU is situated in the western suburb of Beijing, having 70 hectares of land with 300,000 square meters of building.
