Beijing Electron Positron Collider

Under the direct concern of the Party's Central Committee, the State Council and Comrade Deng XiaoPing himself,in July 1990, the Beijing Electron Positron Collider passed the national technical appraisal and accreditation since its operation accorded well with all of the expected designing objectives. The ensuring operation of its experiment service to scientists from both home and abroad signalled that China had secured a foothold in this frontier area of science and technology.

Spring of High Energy Physics in China

On October 7,1984, the ground was broken for the first Chinese high energy accelerator -- the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider at the foot of the eastern side of the Babao Mountain in the west suburb of Beijing. Comrade Deng XiaoPing, Yang Shangkun, Wan Li, Fang Yi, Yu Qiuli, Hu Qiaomu, Hu Qili and other Party and State leaders attended the ground breaking ceremony together with the Chinese scientists. Comrade Deng XiaoPing firmly commented, "I am sure this matter can not be wrong". After experiencing so many twists and turns in the past 30 years or so, the Chinese scientists finally saw the Spring of high energy physics in China in a golden autumn of Beijing. Comrade Deng Yinchao phoned the Chinese physicists, wishing the project "a great success". Comrade Nie Rongzhen wrote them a letter of congratulations, hoping that they would "complete the accelerator by their collective wisdom in the spirit of self-reliance and cooperation,thus making contributions to the four modernizations."

Golden Autumn

October 24,1988, is another golden autumnal day in Beijing, Comrade Deng XiaoPing,who fully deserves the honor of the founder of the project for the first high energy physics accelerator in China -- the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, came back once more to the site where four years ago he laid the foundation stone, inspected the construction of the whole Project with great interest, and delivered a very important speech "China must create a place in the domain of advanced science-technology of the world", This important speech has been incorporated into the "Seleced Works of Deng XiaoPing" recently. Deng's inspection was accompanied by some other leading comrades of the central authorities, Yang Shangkun, Li Peng, Wan Li, Yao Yilin and Wang Zhen. On other occasions, Jiang Zemin, Qiao Shi, Song Ping, Li Ruihuan, Zhu Rongji, Liu Huaqing and Hu Jintao also came respectively to inspect the BEPC Project. Comrades Deng Yinchao and Nie Rongzhen sent in congratulation telegram and letter respectively. The leading comrades of the central authorities highly praised the intelligence and wisdom of the constructors of the Project, as well as their devotion and indomitable work with all their mights for the development of Chinese science. These are the highest honors bestowed to the constructors of the Project by the Party and the People.
