ANNUAL REPORT

(THE COMPUTER CENTER 1995)

  1. Administration & Maintenance of the Computer System

    1.1 Running of the VAX/VMS System

    The computer system was run safely for the whole year, 8400 hours totally The efficiencies of machine running are 96% and the efficiencies of CPU usage are about 40%.

    1.2 Maintenance of the VAX/VMS System

    The system group were involved in the effort of system maintenance and cooperated with the maintenance department of DEC.

    1.3 User Administration

    In order to provide system security as well as take full uses of system resources, authorization and privileges of all user's accounts were checked and system resources were redistributed.

    1.4 Installing,Testing and Running of the HP/UX System

    At the beginning of 1995, the environment that is used for improving BES offline data processing were set up after 8 HP workstations were installed. The CPU ability of the new environment is six times more than VAX/VMS system. The disk space is two times more than the old's.

  2. IHEP Network And Information Service

    2.1 Improving LAN Of The Computer Center

    The LAN of computer center were reorganized and newly installed DEC HUB 900 played a role of core. The main equipments were devided three parts: VAX system, HP system and WAN service system. The running time of network system is over 98% for the whole year.

    2.2 Building IHEP Campus Network

    Computer center took part in building IHEP Campus Network.The fibers connecting the main building, computer center,astrophysics laboratory and other building were installed. The DEC HUB900 in the building #3 was also installed.

    2.3 Setting Up LAN In Main Building Of IHEP

    In order to adapt IHEP campus network and to improve network environment of main building, the Ethernet was installed with fiber from main building to the building #3.

    2.4 Perfecting IHEP HomePage in the WWW

    In 1994, computer center set up IHEP homepage that introduce IHEP image to international HEP community.In 1995, an internal project was set up aiming for reflecting the situation of IHEP rapidly,accurately and completely. An working group was organized and composed of associated departments.

    2.5 Supporting Lepton-Photon International Conference With Internet Usage

    Based on micro waves communication technology,IHEP and BEICC where LP95 was held were connected. 20 terminals and a few workstations were provided for participants to use Internet.
    An sessions of the conference were video taped and croadcasted on Internet by means of Cu See Me, a vedio conferencing technology.

  3. IHEP Management Information System

    IHEP management information system was completed in 1995, which included the Director Office subsystem, Director Affairs subsystem, BEPC NL Office subsystem, Personnel Management subsystem, Projects Management subsystem,financial Affairs subsystem and Materials Supply Department subsystem. These seven subsystems have been installed and used.

  4. Progress of the 3D event display project

    Firstly, 1993's work ( detector and tracks display with DEC-window interface ) was ported to Motif interface. It made the software more portable.
    Secondly, the 3D display of Raw Data was implemented. It is most difficult part of this project.
    Finally, the software was enforced to display any one or more parts of detector and raw data associate with the part of detector. This feature make users more convenient and possible to analyze BES data with much more details.

  5. Other research work

    5.1 The Feasibility Studies of Tau-C Factory

    The feasibility studies of offline data processing of Tau-C factory have been done. HP workstations were choosen to provide computing power for the feasibility studies of Tau-C factory.

    5.2 Artificial Neural Network

    ANN used in high energy experiments, a research project of NSF, has made great progresses. On the national conference of computer used in the nuclear science field,the research report about combining ANN and genetic algorithm was favorable by paticipants.

  6. International Collaboration

    6.1 Phenix Collaboration

    The library of the MC events generator has been set up. Funding from 1996 to 1998 has been approved by the National Natural Scientific Foundation.

    6.2 Belle Collaboration

    A Sun Spare 5 work stations and Three X-terminals have been shipped from KEK and installed at IHEP. The Belle environment has been set up and the works associated with CADD has been started.
